Mom&Pop Shop workshops are going well producing creative ideas for how our Main Street can survive and flourish to serve the village community. We're listing below a few relevant and compelling research and thinking coming from Bruce Katz from the the Nowak Metro Finance Lab at Drexel University, Accelerator for America that address how the shift to bottom up, community-based localism can continue to make the difference in the quality of life for communities across the country. Cities are still holding the attention, but the rural divide is on the verge of getting some attention. Probably this is due to awesome people in communities like Philmont who are collectively and collaboratively pushing the dial and finding creative solutions for cultural and economic sustainable transitions. We received a community suggestion for a laundromat. This idea will be added to the list for Workshop 3 to match to potential new business owner. Keep suggestions coming!
A series of craft demonstrations. Could invite Hudson craft store supplier to attend with a box of supplies for sale, and/or discount coupon.
This format could also be applied to other subject, e.g. use of tools household/gardening. Planting, etc.
Workshop of simple household budgeting, money management, first aid.
We received a suggestion for a Consignment Shop.
I’d second the suggestion for a consignment shop. A twist I imagine could work well would be to provide (and promote) the option of the consigner designating a nonprofit to receive their proceeds as a donation when the item sells. You’d have a cross between a Goodwill and a well curated, high quality second hand shop.
